Description: The garden covers 4 hectares in a ‘hidden valley’ on the lower slope of Harbour Cone, with 200 rhododendrons, interesting and rare trees, shrubs, ponds, paths with herbaceous borders, old-fashioned roses, perennials, a large hellebore collection and bulbs. A valley has been developed recently with a Gondwana planting theme including palms, cordylines, tree ferns and trees of the Araucariaceae family. The latest addition to the garden is a luxury self-contained eco accommodation lodge – Hereweka Retreat. The garden is situated in a valley surrounded by the largest area of native forest on the Otago Peninsula including mature rimu trees.
The garden is reached via a steep drive accessible by car and minibus. Buses can park and turn on the property with a 300m walk up to the garden. The garden is level enough for most visitors.
Admission: Hereweka Garden is open by appointment only. Admission $10.
