Description: The Dunedin Botanic Garden was New Zealand’s first public garden.  It covers 28 hectares of hillside and flat land to the north of the city.  Hill views from sunny lawns, over 6,800 plant species, and the birdsong of wild native bellbirds, wood pigeons and tui are just some of the delights of the Botanic Garden.  As well as being home to significant plant collections, it is a choice spot for serious botanical study.

Mature specimen trees set off the lower garden’s formal rose garden, herb garden, herbaceous borders and the camellia collection.  The rock garden spreads across the sunny bank on the way up the hill to the more naturalistic upper garden.  Here are the arboretum, rhododendron dell, native plant collection and geographic collection.  The regenerated native forest offers shady bush walks.  The aviary showcases native and exotic birds.

The Dunedin Botanic Garden is open daily from dawn to dusk, the Winter garden glasshouse 10am to 4pm, the alpine house and toilets 9am to 4pm and the cafe 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Access: Parking is available for all vehicles in the street alongside the Garden.
